How To Be a Good Crochet Pattern Tester
How To Be a Good Crochet Pattern Tester
Testing crochet patterns is an exciting way to be part of the creative process, but what does it actually involve? Here’s what you need to know to be a good tester.
Applying and being chosen: The initial step of being chosen may be beyond your control but there are a few things that you can do to stand out. Designers vary in their method of application whether it be an app, a link to their website or having you respond to an Instagram or Facebook post. In your response or application, be sure to answer any questions honestly, be respectful and follow all instructions in the application process. Show off your prior work with clear, well-lit photos on social media. Check my other blog on more specifics that will help you get chosen for pattern testing.
Understand the Commitment: Testing isn’t just about crocheting. You’ll need to follow the pattern exactly, take notes, and provide detailed feedback. Don’t make changes that suit your style or ability. The designer has doubtless put in many hours working to get the pattern how he/she likes it.
Be Ready to Meet Deadlines: Designers often work on tight schedules, so sticking to the agreed timeline is crucial. Preparing the pattern for social media, selling platforms and/or websites is very labor intensive for the designer and they appreciate testers that follow through with the time requirements.
Provide Constructive Feedback: This isn’t just about pointing out errors. Answer any questions the designer may have given in the feedback form or platform. Share what you loved, what could be clearer, and any struggles you encountered. Your suggestions may or may not be used; you can feel excited and proud if the designer appreciates something you have suggested. However, don’t take it personally if your suggestions are not incorporated into the final design. It could just be a style difference.
Show Off Your Work: Designers often appreciate testers who can take good photos of the finished project. It’s a great way to support their pattern launch and build your own crochet skills and community. After much experience, many testers have gone on to create and publish their own patterns.
If you are considering pattern testing, do it! Pattern testing can be rewarding and a wonderful way to grow your skills.
