Crocheting with Cotton Thread: A Beginner’s Guide
Let’s experiment with cotton crochet thread.
If you’ve ever admired delicate lace doilies or crocheted earrings, chances are they were crocheted with cotton thread. While cotton thread has a reputation for being tricky, it’s a joy to work with once you get the hang of it. In the days when worsted weight yarn was itchy no matter what brand and was what I call truly the worst, thread crochet became my favorite.
Here are some tips to make your cotton thread crochet experience a breeze:
Choose the Right Hook: Smaller thread sizes need finer hooks. Check the thread label for recommendations, but don’t be afraid to experiment. I typically use a 1.65mm stainless steel crochet hook with #10 cotton crochet thread like Aunt Lydia’s.
Tension is Key: Cotton thread doesn’t have the elasticity of wool or acrylic, so maintaining even tension is important. Practice with small swatches before diving into a big project.
Start Simple: If you’re new to thread crochet, begin with coasters or simple motifs. These smaller projects help you build confidence. Earrings are a great place to start. (Give my shop a quick peruse to see if there are any items that grab you.)
Mind Your Lighting: The fine details of thread crochet are easier to see with good lighting. Natural light or a daylight lamp works wonders. If you have added years of crocheting to your life (ahem, meaning you are a little older like me) try magnifying glasses or readers that have a slight increase in power.
Block your finished project: This may seem like extra work, but your project will come out looking crisp, clean and professional, giving you an extra boost of confidence. Yes, you made it! Show it off with pride.
Cotton thread projects may take patience, but the stunning results are well worth it. From intricate lace to durable home goods to wearables, there’s so much to explore. Enjoy!
