When Should You Block?
If your finished project does not look like the picture in the pattern that you purchased when you finish it, it probably still requires some blocking. Let’s start by defining what blocking is. Blocking in crochet is a method of shaping and softening finished crochet projects. This is done with a waterproof blocking board (or a cling wrapped foam board), pins, tape measure and a spray bottle (optional if you have already moistened your crochet pieces. This process can help open up stitches, prevent curling and create the desired effect of your finished make.

Blocking is crucial for lace patterns, helping to "open up" the delicate stitches and create a more defined, delicate look. If you are crocheting with thread, it is often essential to shape the item into the desired form.
· Shape and Size:
Blocking can help to set the project to its intended shape and size, especially if it's not quite right. This often happens in trying to meet gauge.
· Improved Drape:
Blocking can soften the project and help it become more drapey. TEhis is especially important in garment projects.
· Smooth Edges:
Do you dislike how crochet edges curl up? Blocking can help to prevent this problem, especially in tighter crochet stitches.
· Seaming:
Often, tension differences can become apparent in a crochet project, especially with granny squares or pieces that need to be joined. Blocking ensures pieces are the same size before seaming together for a more uniform and professional finish.
Methods of Blocking:
· Wet Blocking:
The project is fully immersed in water, then gently pressed out on a towel to remove excess moisture.
· Spray Blocking:
If your project is small, such as a coaster or earrings, a spray bottle will suffice to dampen it. Blot the excess moisture around it prior to shaping and pinning.
· Steam Blocking:
Steam is used to penetrate the fibers and relax the stitches. A damp cloth or towel can be placed over the project to protect it from direct heat.
